After 11 years in secondary school teaching, Stephen was recruited as Executive Director of the NZ Motor Industry Training Board. After 5 years in that role, Stephen led the evolution of NZMITB into MITO, the New Zealand Motor Industry Training Organisation. MITO now has as part of its brief the setting of training standards and qualifications for the road transport and logistics industries. He left that role at the end of 2012 to focus full time on the family business, Stephen Wickens & Associates Ltd, which he had run part time from 2002. S W & A became the PassRite Licencee for the Wellington Region in 2012, and since that time he has reported to the Branch Manager Pania, his daughter.
While employed at MITO and Whitireia, Stephen had contract roles with NZQA in accreditation and audit, and for the 3 years prior to its absorbtion into MITO he was a moderator for Tranzqual, the Road Transport and Logistics ITO. While at NZMITB Stephen was appointed to the Board of the NZ Trades Certification Board (1985-1990) and the Council of the Petone Technical Institute (now Weltec) 1985- 1996.
Stephen gained his HT Licence in 1968, with the intention of driving trucks for the NZ Railways during his university holidays, and from 1977 to 1985 he spent an average of 20 - 25 hours per week driving busses and coaches for Meehan Motors Ltd out of Porirua. Meehan Motors was sold out to Mana Coach Services in 1985.
