Overseas Licence Conversion

How do I convert my overseas license?

There are a couple of options that available to you and PassRite will be happy to explain these to you.

Drivers converting an overseas licence to a NZ licence.

The minimum age criteria for obtaining a learner, restricted or full NZ licence also applies to those drivers converting an overseas licence to a NZ licence.
This is to ensure novice drivers cannot use an overseas licence to circumvent the GDLS – thus gaining an unfair advantage over other drivers.
Drivers converting an overseas licence to a NZ licence will also be entitled to apply for an exemption. The same criteria will apply to these overseas drivers as applies to those progressing through the NZ GDLS. This ensures all drivers are treated equally.

Briefly the options are:

Option 1.
You need to obtain you learners licence for the class of licence you are seeking (which results in a full NZ licence with a suervisor condition) by sitting the theory test with the approved licensing agent.
Once you have obtained your learners licence you can then pre-book and sit the practical test with the testing agent.
You will be required to provide a suitable compliant vehicle for the class of licence you are seeking.

Option 2 (For classes 2, 4 & 5 ON LY)
You need to obtain you learners licence for the class of licence you are seeking by sitting the theory test with the approved licensing agent..
Once you have obtained your learners licence and completed the Approived Course you can apply for an NZTA exemption from sitting the practical test with the testing authority.
To present an approved course certificate instead of passing the practical test an exemption form DL4 is required from NZTA. The exemption is applied for AFTER you complete the course and the cost to apply for the exemption is $28.

You will also be required to send with your exemption form your original overseas licence, our original course certificate, and your completed course study guides to NZTA when you apply for the exemption. We will assist you to complete the exemption application form, and are confident that the application will be approved. If for any reason your application is declined, we will accompany you for a full practical licence test, and will allow you to use our truck free of charge for one attempt at the test
